Tips & tricks for your new T-Mobile HD2; increase Opera tabs, Zune music, & more

Sunday, May 30, 2010

I picked up my T-Mobile HD2 the other day and believe there are thousands of others that did the same based on my in-store experience and reports that the device is sold out across the country. Since I had the chance to use the Euro model and now this one while also being very familiar with Windows Mobile devices I thought I would put together a post of some key tips and tricks to help out new HD2 owners. This should also lighten my inbox load as I continually get questions from readers about these new devices and ways to optimize them for their usage.
Enable more tabs in the Opera browser

I personally find the Opera browser on the HD2 to be superior even to the iPhone (just compare the way that text is reflowed to fit on the screen) so when you do this comparison you will find that Opera only allows you to have 3 tabs/windows of the browser open at once. Don’t worry, you can customize how many tabs you like and I personally have mine set to 6. Follow these steps to increase the number of allowed tabs for a better browsing experience:

1. Enter opera:config as the URL
2. Scroll down to User Prefs and tap on it to open the submenus
3. Scroll down to Maximum Allowed Tabs and change it to what you like. As I stated, I changed mine to 6 since I highly doubt I would ever need more than that. I can always go back and change it later too.
4. Scroll down and tap on Save.
5. Restart the browser to see the changes.

Use Swype for fast one-handed text entry:-

I mentioned and showed this off a bit in my 24-minutes video, but wanted to list the steps for you to enable the Swype input keyboard. Follow these steps to enable Swype:

1. Enter an area where there is a text input field (browser URL, new appointment, new message).
2. Tap the text input open space.
3. Tap the small arrow to the right of the center icon on the bottom of your display.
4. Select/tap on Swype from the list of text input options (you can see there are other options here too).
5. Trace a path through the letters of a word and lift your finger.
6. For more than one word, just start your next word and Swype will enter a space between them.
7. You will see a pop-up box appear at times when Swype can’t quite figure out what you are tracing and you can then tap one of the suggested options to enter it. The one at the top in green is most likely and if you do nothing or tap the space bar then that will be entered.
8. If you see the small “i” above the bottom left Swype icon you can tap it for other word choices.
9. When the “i” is not blinking, you can tap the bottom left Swype icon for other tips and help.

More email settings:-

Some of the more advanced settings I am used to entering in Windows Mobile are hidden pretty deep on the HD2 since the device is designed for standad setup and optimized for the user experience. However, I personally like a bit more control over my email so follow these steps to get access to these advanced settings:

1. On the email tab, tap the left Inbox word at the bottom of the display.
2. Tap Menu in the bottom right, then slide your finger up the display a bit to reveal Tools.
3. Tap Tools, then slide your finger up the display a bit to reveal Options.
4. You can now manage signatures, uncheck the “Warn when deleting” notice, have email attachments stored on your microSD card and more through the four tabs in this area.
5. You can also tap the name of an individual account to setup how many days of email you will see on the device, how often emails are downloaded, size of downloads, and much more.

Exiting the volume screen:-

Volume on the HD2 is controlled by pressing and holding up or down on the volume rocker. When you do this the volume utility screen will appear so you can quickly jump to Vibrate or Silent mode. If you do not want to wait the few seconds for the display to disappear, simply tap outside the vertical volume bar to close the utility.
Find, download and listen to podcasts

I am sure you all listen to our weekly MobileTechRoundup podcast and you may be like me and spend a LOT of time listening to other great shows like TiPB, The Cell Phone Junkie, TWIT, PalmCast, GDGT, and more. Did you know that the RSS Hub application (branded version of Ilium Software’s Newsbreak) is preloaded onto your new HD2 and can be used as both a RSS aggregator and a podcatcher? You can subscribe to all your favorite podcasts and even setup to have them downloaded automatically so they are ready for you to enjoy.
Using Zune Pass on your HD2

I am a big fan of the Slacker Radio client/service on my HD2, but am also a Zune Pass subscriber. As I mentioned a few months ago you can use your Zune Pass subscription music with your HD2 through Windows Media Player on your Windows PC.

The White iPhone 4G HD

Saturday, May 29, 2010

You have probably heard the rumors about the leaked white front panel of the next generation iPhone which have had people talking about the fact that Apple might be going to offer the 4th generation iPhone in both black and white color models. These will be full around to the front panel. Well to help give you a better idea of what this will mean I want to show you the real thing. These stunning renderings of the iPhone 4G/HD in full white color have surfaced recently and they will give you a great idea of what the real version of this color variant will look like if Apple really are going to release it as an option. What do you think?

There is a big controversy over the appearance of the iPhone with most people either loving or hating the new all flat design for the iPhone compared to the rounded corners that come with the iPhone 3G/3GS. After taking a look at these pictures though I am sure you will agree that this new design really is pretty amazing.

I don’t know if these rendered images which are based on the iPhone 4G will actually represent the next iPhone that Apple will launch or not but I’m sure you will agree that whether they do or not it looks pretty good anyway.

Apple is expected to unveil the next generation iPhone at the annual WWDC 2010 conference which will be held on the 7th of June and they will then be made available for general public. The new iPhone OS 4 is also expected to be released at this annual event too.

There is not that long left to wait and in another week we will all know exactly what Apple have planned and exactly what they are launching. Until then all we can do is speculate. I have to admit, I really do like the idea of a white iPhone and I’m sure there are many people out there who think the same. If you were given the option which color would you choose for your iPhone 4G HD?

Are You Ready For The Apple iWatch?

There has been talk about Apple introducing an iWatch for quite some time now so I wanted to update you on this. The Apple iWatch concept has been designed by an Italian design house by the name of ADR Studio. When the information about this concept was released there was a tremendous amount of interest in the not only the concept but the actual Apple iWatch itself. It seems that people haven’t forgotten about watches afterall.Since the introduction of mobile phones watches have kind of become irrelevant. When people ask you for the time it is an automatic reaction to take out your phone and look. Do people still wear watches?

Well obviously they do and after the tremendous response that ADR Studio received for their iWatch concept the designer actually went and created a brand new video so that he could show off his vision of what the next best thing from Apple could be like. I have to admit, it looks pretty amazing but you can be the judge of this yourself.

Before you jump ahead and watch the video here is a brief explanation from the designer himself about his amazing concept:

The Apple iWatch concept is a wrist device that features an aluminum body, WiFi and Bluetooth, integrated RSS reader, 16GB of storage for music and pictures, a weather forecast system, connectivity with iPhone and iPad and an LCD projector so that users can beam their photos and videos onto a wall or something similar in order to watch them.

It sounds amazing doesn’t it so take a look at the video below which has been inspired by the official iPhone and iPad ads that have been created by Apple.

New iPhone to have 960 x 640 screen, 512 MB memory

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Apple's iPhone manufacturer Foxconn is set to ship 24 million units of the latest iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone HD, with shipments starting in June, according to Digitimes, which cited sources from Taiwan-based component makers.

Apple's fourth-generation iPhone is expected to be unveiled at WWDC in early June, with first shipments expected later that month. While details about the device are still sketchy, Digitimes report stated that the new iPhone will run on the Arm Cortex A8 processor, have 512MB memory (as opposed to storage, the better to be able to multitask), and 960x640 screen resolution.

Additionally, as another move toward supporting multitasking, the new iPhone has a 33 percent thinner panel than in previous iPhones to allow larger battery modules. Digitimes states that Foxconn will ship 4.5 million units in the first half of 2010 and 19.5 million units for the rest of the year.

Don't blame AT&T for the 3G iPad's video streaming failings

Customers began receiving their 3G iPads on Friday, as expected. The hardware was purportedly the same as a wi-fi only iPad. You might expect, with the exceptions for applications we know don't work on 3G on the iPhone (like Skype), that everything should work the same, 3G vs. wi-fi. You'd be wrong, but honestly, should you have expected any less?

Based on experiences with the iPhone and 3G vs. wi-fi on applications, there were certainly suspicions that quite a few things might not work on the iPad. For example, the "ABC Player for iPad" won't work on 3G. Instead, users receive the message, “Please connect to a Wi-Fi network to use this application. Cellular networks are not supported at this time.”

Additionally, the iPad's built-in YouTube application "strips both standard and HD videos to a dramatically lower resolution over the cellular data connection." Meanwhile, it appears that iTunes Store video previews are just fine (wonder why that is? ... insert sarcasm here).

Netflix, however, appears to be working normally. The question is, why the differences between applications?

This is the same sort of thing that's still happening on the iPhone, where Skype still has no 3G capable application, but Fring does. Once again, why the difference?

While the first finger to be pointed would obviously be targeted right at AT&T, whose 3G network has struggled under the weight of the iPhone, much less the iPad (AT&T supplies the 3G service for the iPad in the U.S.), an AT&T spokesperson replied: "It’s just a question for Apple."

Hmm. Finger pointing from AT&T toward Apple. Meanwhile, Business Week's Dan Frommer tweeted:

ABC is wifi only on purpose. I believe rights play a role. (they're different on wifi vs 3G) sounds dumb but true.

Bottom line: AT&T is a popular whipping boy in issues like this, and we would be remiss if we did not point out that indeed, their 3G network leaves a lot to be desired, but the answer here is fragmented and probably specific to each "failed" app.

Official iPhone Twitter app arrives in the App Store

The official Twitter app for the iPhone has arrived in the App Store. As we know it's the Tweetie app, rebranded by Twitter after they acquired developer Atebits.

The app first appeared in New Zealand's App Store and worked its way globally to the other App Stores. Additiuonally, Twitter for iPhone is now, as promised, free of charge. Formerly, Tweetie was priced at $2.99 in the U.S. App Store. In addition to re-branding the app, however, several changes were made, and the version upped to 3.0.

Tweetie is now Twitter! We didn’t just do a name change, we’ve added a bunch of new stuff.

Search has been reorganized, now you can search all tweets and find users in the same spot, view Top Tweets and Browse Suggested users.

Search results now include Top Tweets, try it with Trends...winner combo!

You can now use Twitter without an account! Search, Browse uses, view trends and top tweets.

Sign-up is now availabile within the application as well, complete with Suggested user list.

More tab has been re-organized to accomplish all this. Users with one account can add a second account under the Accounts and Settings button here.

Actions we’ve found people use most, like Retweet have been moved to the main actions bar.

Minor tweaks were made to tweet rendering so they match Twitter.com tweets

iPad passes one million in sales, all domestic

Apple announced on Monday it had passed the magic milestone of one million in terms of iPad sales. According to the company, the one millionth iPad was sold last Friday, which is (not coincidentally) when the iPad 3G first hit retail.

Box Shot : Panda Antivirus Pro 2010Apple's million iPad mark was reached with domestic sales only. Earlier Apple announced it was delaying the international launch of the device, based on unexpected demand. Pre-orders will begin Monday, May 10th, with both the wi-fi and 3G models expected to launch at the end of May, in the U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Italy, Japan, Span and Switzerland.

In addition to the device, apps and iBooks are hot sellers as well. The press release noted that iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million iBooks.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs also emphasized that the iPad hit the one million mark in 28 days, and compared it to sales of the original iPhone, which needed 74 days to reach the milestone. Of course, that's really comparing apples (no pun intended) to oranges, as it's only since the iPhone 3G that iDevice-mania has become truly crazy.

Why overheard cell phone calls bug us so much

A new study to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science purports to reveal just why overhearing cell phones calls, on the bus, on the subway, or wherever, apparently bother us so much.

The study, by Cornell University, suggests it's not because, as many have noted, many people on cell phones shout into their handsets as their is no sidetone. Rather, the study suggests that human brains simply don't like one-sided conversations.

The study tested 41 college students to see how their results on a series of cognitive tests on a computer were affected by either silence, a monologue, a conversation between two people, and half a conversation (called a "halfalogue," such as overhearing a cell phone call). It was the "halfalogue" which lowered participant's scores on the tests.

The study showed that a one-sided conversation draws more attention and drains concentration from listeners. Researchers believe that we are unable to tune out a "halfalogue" because unlike a monologue to a two-sided conversation, listeners try to make sense out of the half they hear and predict what speakers will say next.

Lauren Emberson is a co-author of the study, along with Michael Goldstein. "When you hear half of a conversation, you get less information and you can't predict as well," she said. "It requires more attention."

The researchers noted that while talking on a cell phone is already known to distract drivers, listening to a passenger's cell phone conversation may also be distraction. Further study should be done, they indicated.

Wear your geekiness on Geek Pride Day

May 25, 2010 is Geek Pride Day 2010. While in high school, you may not have felt all that proud if you were labeled a geek, any trip to a high school reunion might have shown you otherwise.

Geek Pride Day has been unofficially celebrated on May 25 since 2006. For those with long memories, May 25, 1977 was the premiere of "Star Wars," later renumbered chapter IV and renamed "A New Hope," in 1977.

Shoebuy.com Free Shipping and Free ReturnsThe idea first began in a bar in Albany, NY. Tim McEachern organized events called the Geek Pride Festival and / or Geek Pride Day from 1998 to 2000. However, in 2006, this day was celebrated for the first time all over Spain and on the Internet.

It wasn't until 2008 that Geek Pride Day crossed the Atlantic and hit America. In 2009, Geek Pride Day reached the Science Channel, where special programming was aired on May 25 to celebrate.

Why should nerds and geeks be proud on this day? One look at Steve Wozniak or Bill Gates, obvious geeks, and their success should be enough. For those who might have gone to their high school reunions, as mentioned above, and seen the down-and-out high school QB, balding and not doing so well, that's another example.

At any rate, today is Geek Pride Day. Buy a geek a cup of coffee, as they survive on caffeine.

AT&T agrees to unlock any handset (except for iPhones, sorry)

As a result of a class-action lawsuit settlement (pre-trial), AT&T has agreed to unlock any phones in its customer base, with some caveats. One of those is basically, no iPhones.

Pre-paid customers must provide proof of purchase, while subscribers are required to have their accounts in good standing and have "completed a minimum of 90 days of active service." That's pretty typical; T-Mobile has a 90 day requirement as well. Customers may request 5 unlock codes per year.

Ah, but herein lies the rub. Additionally, the documents state that "For AT&T Handsets for which AT&T Mobility has an exclusive sales arrangement with a manufacturer of less than 10 months, the period of exclusivity associated with that sale must have expired before an unlocking code can be obtained."

Oh, oh, you might ask. What about phones for which there is rumored to be continued exclusivity until 2012 (like the iPhone). You will, in that case, be out of luck. If you are surprised, you shouldn't be.

How Li-Lo's SCRAM monitoring bracelet works

Lindsay Lohan was "sentenced" to wearing an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet on Monday. The $1,500 bracelet is just another way that technology
ensures compliance for these sorts of sentences.

Fandango - Movie Tickets OnlineSimilar to much better known monitoring bracelets used to restrict suspects or parolees to certain locations, Lindsay Lohan's ankle bracelet, dubbed SCRAM for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring, has been available since 2003, and is in use in all states except Hawaii.

Lindsay Lohan's SCRAM ankle bracelet uses the same technology as a Breathalyzer but, naturally, it's hard to get breath from one's ankle. Instead the device samples perspiration on the skin, testing every half hour. Generally once a day, the information is sent to Alcohol Monitoring Systems Inc., which currently makes the only alcohol ankle bracelet.

If the alcohol amount is 0.02 or higher, the company alerts the proper authorities. According to the company, a 180-pound man would register 0.02 if he has two 5-ounce drinks in less than an hour on an empty stomach.

Judge Marsha Revel told Lohan that in order to stay free on bail, she must wear the SCRAM device and she must submit to random drug testing. Revel also restricted Lohan to the L.A. area, which will interfere with a Texas film that Lohan is involved in. Although Revel should realize that Lohan's job options of late have been few and far between, she basically said "tough luck" to the troubled actress, who is still under probation after incidents in 2007.

Amazon CEO

SEATTLE – A color version of Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle e-reader may come eventually, but it won't be soon.

Speaking Tuesday at the online retailer's annual shareholder meeting in Seattle, founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said that adding color to the Kindle's "electronic ink" display is a difficult technical challenge and that a color screen is "still a long way out." Bezos said he's seen things "in the laboratory" that are "still not ready for prime-time production."

Tablet computers such as Apple Inc.'s iPad and some e-readers sport LCD displays, which can show color. But those are harder to see in sunlight and consume much more power than e-ink displays.

As usual, Bezos did not detail how many Kindles Amazon has sold since the product launched in 2007, except to say customers have bought "millions" of them.

Also Tuesday, Bezos said that Amazon Web Services, which sells Web hosting and data-storage services to other companies, has the potential to be as large as Amazon's retail business eventually. He called the overall market for such services a "very, very large area" that is generally not being done efficiently.

"Whenever something is done inefficiently, that creates an opportunity," Bezos said.

For now Amazon's Web services division has a long way to go. It is part of a group that had $188 million in revenue in the first quarter, while Amazon's retail operations brought in nearly $7 billion.

Google gets Pac-Man fever

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man
, Google has created the first-ever interactive and playable doodle, or custom home page logo. Seen here is a screenshot of the game, as it is being played on the Google home page.
(Credit: Google)

Saturday is the 30th anniversary of the release of Pac-Man, and to commemorate the occasion, Google is rolling out its first-ever truly interactive and playable home page logo, a fully-functional version of the iconic 1980s video game.

For years, Google has produced its so-called doodles for all kinds of holidays and special occasions, from Valentine's Day to the Fourth of July to Mother's Day and many others. In each case, the Google Doodle team works on a special logo that appears on the search engine's home page.

But a few months ago, when the team discovered that May 22 would be the 30th anniversary of the release of Pac-Man in Japan--it was actually called Puck Man, but that name was rejected in the United States because of the propensity of the "P" to chip and look like an "F"--they knew they had to do something extra special.

"When we became aware of the...anniversary," said Ryan Germick, a member of the Google Doodle team, "we thought it would be awesome to create not only something that references Pac-Man on the home page, but also something playable."

Until now, the most interactive of the logos had been one last Halloween that users could click to see more candy, and another for Isaac Newton's birthday that dropped apples. But for the Pac-Man celebration (see video below), Google has pulled out all the stops and has built, from scratch, a fully-playable version of the game, complete with 255 levels and re-created (but authentic) sounds and graphics. And unlike most of the special logos, which disappear off the home page--but are available in perpetuity in the archives--when the day is over, the Pac-Man doodle will stay up for 48 hours.

According to Germick, the company worked with Pac-Man's publisher, Namco Bandai, to make the project as realistic as possible. Yet the Google team, with the inspirational lead of Marcin Wichary, a Google senior user experience designer, built their version of the game from the ground up using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

"We are very excited about the Google doodle project," Namco Bandai President and CEO Kenji Hisatsune told CNET by e-mail. "With this being the first time Google has ever included sound or made a doodle playable demonstrates just how big of an impact Pac-Man has made. "

And in the end, Wichary made a "picture-perfect" version of the game, Germick said. Except for one thing, of course. Being a Google home page logo, it had to have the word "Google" in its design, so Wichary, Germick and their colleagues built their version of Pac-Man so that it had the search engine's name in the middle of the iconic board.

Growing up with games
For Wichary, who grew up in Poland, arcade video games were in his blood. His father was a game technician who used to take him around to arcades and let him see how the various machines worked. From those humble beginnings came a lifetime of interest in games and, now, the motivation and passion to make the Pac-Man project be as faithful as possible to the original game.

That commitment to authenticity extended, Wichary explained, to some of Pac-Man's little quirks. For example, though many people would never have experienced this, the original arcade game had a bug that resulted in anyone making it past the 255th level hitting what came to be called the "kill screen," where the machine essentially crashed. Google made sure to build that experience into their game.

Similarly, after completing some levels of Pac-Man, a player would sit through brief animations, which came to be known as "coffee breaks," since it provided enough time to stretch one's fingers and, perhaps, grab a cup of coffee. That, too, has been built into the Google version.

And the team was so focused on making their version true to the original that they even included some of the smallest touches possible, things that only the most serious Pac-Man players would know about. Wichary said those include things like the fact that in the original game, the ghosts would give the slightest hint of which direction they were going to turn by moving their eyes that way. That was included in the Google version, as was a peculiarity that allowed Pac-Man to cut corners by a couple of pixels while the ghosts had to turn them at full right angles.

In addition, Wichary pointed out that the original game was "deterministic," meaning that players could memorize and develop winning patterns. Google, too, built that into its version, meaning that those who put some serious time into the game now will be able to make a lot of headway by figuring out the patterns that work best.

Namco Bandai President and CEO Kenji Hisatsune.

"Google spent a lot of man-hours making sure the simple things that make Pac-Man were included," Hisatsune said, referencing the coffee break and 255th-level bug.

Germick explained that at Google, the Doodle team is always looking for ways to make the Google home page a "fun place to be," so once the team came up with the idea for the Pac-Man project, "it didn't take a lot of selling internally. Once people saw it, they were like, 'Awesome.'"

Putting together the Google version of Pac-Man took a couple of months, but Wichary said it would be hard to estimate how much time they actually put into the project because "I enjoyed it so much. It was a throwback to my childhood."

Indeed, Wichary said that one of his biggest reasons for getting involved in this effort was to help bring other people back to their own childhoods.

I'm feeling lucky
On a normal day, Google's home page features two simple buttons: one for a full keyword-specific search and the famous "I'm feeling lucky" choice, which picks one result based on a keyword.

For the Pac-Man project, the team has converted the "I'm feeling lucky" button into an "Insert coin" slot, reminiscent of the place where countless kids have pumped billions of quarters over the years.

Fittingly, the team decided that if they were going to make their Pac-Man game authentic, they would need to make it playable by two people at once. So where a single player will, so to speak, insert a single coin, clicking twice sets up a two-player game. In that case, one player will be Pac-Man and the other will be Ms. Pac-Man, and both will be playing on the same board at the same time, using a single keyboard.

In the end, the Google team put a lot of focus into re-building what is one of the best-known and recognized games of all time. For a game that's 30 years old, it holds up remarkably well over time, and still has a hold on popular culture.

And as something that is still a hit so many years later, it made perfect sense to the Google team to break new ground with its approach to the Pac-Man project. Yet, rather than just getting code from Namco, they decided to do things the Google way.

"I wanted to do the same thing we do with everything else at Google," Wichary said, "which is use modern Web technologies. So we built it from the ground up."

Pac-man 30th Anniversary and ‘Empire Strikes Back’

Two of the most amazing things from my childhood are celebrating their 30th anniversaries this weekend: Pacman and Empire Strikes Back. It’s hard to believe it’s been thirty years since Pacman fever reigned, but even harder to believe that this is the weekend I got sick at the movie theatre because I made my dad take me to see Empire Strikes Back and didn’t tell him I had the flu.

My friends and I played Pacman on the Atari nonstop, and when we weren’t playing on the Atari, we were at the local arcade feeding quarters into the console. I even raised my daughter on Pacman, and today she can be found with her Gameboy in the corner chomping pellets and chasing ghosts all over the maze.

Google is celebrating the anniversary
with a special Pacman game you can play right on your search screen, but if you don’t feel like leaving the site and opening Google up, I embedded a Pacman game you can play right here:
Pacman.

1980 was a life-shaping year, as Empire Strikes Back hit theatres too. Along with playing Pacman, my friends and I also played Star Wars, reliving the new movie as best we could since we wouldn’t be able to watch it outside the theatre for years after it was released. We could often be found parading around with cardboard laser guns, me with my hair in cinnamon buns, our Han Solo telling Chewbacca (the neighbor’s dog) to “Laugh it up, Fuzzball.”

The world wasn’t like it is today, but both Pacman and Empire Strikes Back had a huge impact on the youth of yesteryear. Even if you weren’t alive in 1980, you’ve heard of and probably enjoyed both at some point during the last thirty years.

Take a moment to celebrate today. I mean, come on… It’s not every day Han Solo gets frozen in carbonite.

fans Can Play Pac-Man From Google's Homepage for 48 Hours

About Pac-man:-

PAC-MAN is a cultural icon whose popularity has crossed the globe for 30 years. This official PAC-MAN 30th Anniversary site is dedicated to telling the story of PAC-MAN through his games, gear, and accomplishments. His journey through the maze of gaming infamy is far from over! Be sure to check in as the story is told that is distinctly PAC-MAN!

Pac-Man is back. And to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic video arcade game, Google has unveiled its first-ever interactive doodle – a Pac-Man game that Web users can play straight from Google's homepage.

On May 22, 1980 the now-iconic Pac-Man game was released in Japan by Namco Bandai Games. Originally called Puck Man, Pac-Man launched in the U.S. in October 1980 and went on to sell more than 100,000 units in its first year of production.

The name of the game comes from the sound of eating, according to the official Pac-Man website. "Paku" is the Japanese sound for "chomp."

Now the game is listed by Guinness World Records as the world's most successful coin-operated game.

To help recognize the pop culture mainstay, at 11 a.m. ET today (midnight in Japan), Google turned its homepage over to a Pac-Man game that can be played for the next 48 hours.

Visitors can click on the "insert coin" button or wait 10 seconds to automatically start the game, which reaches 256 levels.

Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd Digital Camera - Review

Design and Features of the Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd Digicam:-

Like most, the 6-megapixel Z5fd offers a 3x zoom lens with a typically narrow f/3.5-4.2 36mm-108mm-equivalent lens. The 148g camera's dimensions are 99 x 55 x 19mm, which makes it comfortable to stick in your pocket, but not quite as comfortable to shoot with. For instance, because of the combination of the camera's thin profile and the position of the lens so close to the edge, our finger frequently crept into the frame (only once did it actually end up in the photo, though).

The Z5fd's most novel feature is the Trimming for Blog tool, which, in addition to the age-old ability to crop a photo to 640 x 480, allows you to download the photos to a compatible device via IrSimple. We are not sure how popular this is in Asia, but as far as we can tell, not a lot of phones in the US support it. So as of now, all you can really do is bounce the photos back and forth among select Fujifilm cameras.

Calling out the face detection with a dedicated button (and, of course, the "fd" in the model name) certainly makes it easier to find and use, but I'm still on the fence about how useful it is. It can locate more than one face in a scene but must choose a single face to take priority--usually the one closest to the center of the frame. The algorithm needs to be able to resolve two eyes, which seems to mean a horizontal angle of about 25 or 30 degrees off face front; it seems to have more tolerance vertically. A face must be within roughly 20 feet, and beyond that it starts to struggle. It's not fast enough to keep up with changing positions, and you frequently end up shooting in between face-focus locks (at which point it acts like normal focus).

Another Fujifilm staple is the Natural Light and Flash scene mode, which shoots two consecutive shots, one at a high ISO setting without flash, and one at a lower ISO setting with flash. You can then choose which look you prefer. The rest of the scene modes are pretty standard: Natural Light (high ISO), Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night, Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Museum, Party, Flower (macro), and Text. A Picture Stabilization mode merely uses high ISO settings to enable faster shutter speeds. In macro mode the camera can focus as close as about 3.1 inches.

That's about it. The Z5fd completely lacks any manual controls. No shutter- or aperture-priority exposure, no metering choices--not even manual white balance.

Though the 2.5-inch LCD tends to blow out in bright sunlight, it otherwise works very well. Plus, the Z5fd offers the option of driving the display at 30fps, 60fps, or in a standard power save mode. Though denoted by frame rates, the 60fps does make the screen look slightly higher resolution than the other modes. As you'd guess, it draws more power, as well.

Performance of the Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd Digicam

The Z5fd's performance falls on the high side of average for its class; in other words, it doesn't set any records, but it's got little to be ashamed about. It's up and shooting within 1.6 seconds, and imposes a reasonable 0.5-second shutter delay under typical bright shooting conditions. In less-than-optimal light, that increases to about 1.1 seconds, good for its type. Unsurprisingly, it follows that it has a very good typical shot-to-shot time of 1.7 seconds. With flash enabled, that time rises to about 2.6 seconds.

Burst shooting represents the Z5fd's weakest performance aspect; maxing out at 0.7fps, it's not very useful. Fujifilm supplies 2.2fps Top 3 and Final 3 burst modes to help compensate: Top 3 simply bursts for three shots while Final 3 shoots up to 40 frames, saving only the last three.

Though its photos can be pretty good, the Z5fd performs inconsistently. On one hand, we see no lens distortion or focus problems, nary a compression artifact and only the occasional case of purple fringing. Photos look relatively sharp and white balance reasonably neutral. If you want that typical vivid snapshot appearance, you'll have to switch into Chrome (as in slide film) color mode, because the standard mode looks a little flat relative to most point-and-shoot models.

Image Quality of the Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd Digicam

Producing consistently correct exposures is the Z5fd's biggest issue. Though not uncommon among budget cameras, poor exposure of backlit subjects is unnecessary; all the manufacturer has to do is link spot metering to the center-point focus setting, an option which many of them, including the Z5fd, provide. It doesn't need to be user selectable. Using fill flash is a poor substitute, especially given the Z5fd's limited range of up to 11.5 feet (wide angle, auto ISO). The Z5fd also has problems with any unevenly lit scene, something that can't be solved by increasing the ISO sensitivity setting.

Furthermore, the Z5fd doesn't fare very well shooting movies. They look okay played at actual size (640x480); they should, given the MJPEG AVI file's somewhat piggy megabyte per minute of storage. But the camera can't optically zoom during capture, and doesn't even refocus if you pan across a scene.

All of which adds up to a pretty typical, not particularly notable addition to the budget-camera pantheon. The Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd probably ranks as one of the smaller, cuter budget models, but it's ultimately your call as to whether the marginally slimmer build makes up for the missing features and inconsistent photo quality. We don't think it does.

Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi

EOS 450D get ready to play:-

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 24 January 2008: Canon today launches its latest D-SLR, the EOS 450D. Featuring a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and a new 9-point AF system, the model presents consumers with an unprecedented level of image quality and versatility at this end of the market.

The EOS 450D employs features already proven in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor and a redesigned menu system that enables features such as direct control of Speedlite flash units from the camera LCD. A choice of 13 custom functions allows the photographer to customise the camera to their shooting style.

“The EOS 450D bears the fruits of more than 20 years of ongoing investment into EOS,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “This camera continues Canon’s policy of taking technologies proven in the professional arena and putting them within reach of a wider market of amateur photographers.”

The EOS 450D features:-

* 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor
* Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System
* 3.5 frames per second
* 3.0” LCD with Live View shooting
* 9-point wide-area AF system with f/2.8 cross-type centre point
* Picture Style image processing parameters
* DIGIC III image processor
* Digital Photo Professional RAW processing software1
* Compact and Lightweight body
* Fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites

The EOS quality advantage:-

With all key components developed and manufactured in-house, EOS offers photographers a unique quality advantage. The EOS 450D’s specially designed 12.2 Megapixel sensor employs Canon’s high-sensitivity, low-noise CMOS technology to produce richly detailed images with minimal grain. The DIGIC III processor ensures superior image rendering and rapid response times, with an almost instant 0.1 start up. Image data is processed at 14 bits for Delivering a burst rate of 3.5 frames per second, the DIGIC III processor works with the image buffer to handle up to 53 JPEGs (6 in RAW) without interruption.

Built for better photos:-

The EOS 450D is designed to make photography a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience. Housed in a compact body that weighs less than 475 grams, the camera features an improved grip design that provides a natural, ergonomic fit with the user’s hands. A large, bright viewfinder makes image composition clearer and more comfortable. The menu system inherited from professional EOS cameras uses a simplified tab structure that does away with scrolling. It includes a user-defined My Menu tab for instant access to frequently used settings.

Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects. The new Auto Lighting Optimiser corrects brightness and contrast during image processing, while improving skin tones in portraits by ensuring correct exposure for faces. Photographers can also enable additional noise reduction for shots captured at high ISO speeds.

Live View:-

Available for the first time on a Canon consumer D-SLR, Live View mode makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when shooting from a tripod. The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth, 30fps video feed on the 3.0” LCD, which is 50% brighter than the screen of the EOS 400D. A grid line display and live histogram can be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Two types of auto focus are available: Quick AF flips the camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor; Live AF uses the image contrast data to focus - a method familiar to anyone upgrading from a compact digital camera.

For studio environments, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.

Other improvements:-

The EOS 450D complements its headline features with a host of smaller improvements that enhance the photographic experience. The viewfinder now displays all key exposure information including ISO speed. The addition of spot metering (4% of viewfinder) allows for greater control over exposure in tricky lighting conditions. PictBridge functionality has been expanded so that photographers can correct horizons and add picture effects before printing. A new high capacity battery extends shooting time on a single charge to a maximum of 500 shots.

Software:-

The EOS 450D is supplied with a comprehensive software suite that provides everything the photograph needs to manage and process images. This includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as Dust Delete Data and Picture Styles. The supplied Picture Style Editor software can be used to create custom Picture Styles for fine control over colour display. The camera also comes with EOS Utility, Image/Zoom Browser and Photostitch.
